Abstract

124,572. Kitchen, J. G. A. March 27, 1918. Steering; stopping way; planes and the like, construction of.-For stopping way of aircraft, a pair of rudders a, b of the shape shown, and as described in Specification 3249/14, [Class 114, Ships &c., Propelling &c.], are arranged to be moved about an axis c by means of rods e, f so as to bring their rear edges together to form a pocket. The rudders are also capable of operation in the same direction for steering purposes, and may further be used as elevators by adjustment about a pivot d. To increase their action as elevators, horizontal planes may be provided in place of the operating-rods f, and they may be operated simultaneously with the ordinary elevators. According to the Provisional Specification, the rudders may be operated by fluid pressure, or may be made to converge automatically, during landing, by the contact of a trailing arm with the ground. Propelling.-The rudders may be arranged partly to surround a rear propeller.
