Abstract

6388. Losse, E. March 14. Aerial machines without aerostats; planes, arrangement of. - An aeroplane comprises a body a, Figs. 1 and 2, of semicylindrical shape, rear fixed planes b, d, forward circular revolving planes e adapted to act also as propellers, front and rear elevators h, i, a fixed vertical plane 11 at the rear, and screw propellers f. In a modification, Fig. 10, the front elevator and the screw propellers are dispensed with, the propulsion being effected solely by the rotary propellers e, and elevating by a tail 12. Moreover, the planes b, d are replaced by planes b<1>, and a rear rudder 13 is provided. Propelling is effected by means of feathering blades x, y, Figs. 7 and 8, mounted on a pair of oppositely rotating disks e, which are connected to vertical shafts o driven from the engine, and consist of circular planes of canvas connected to centre-pieces n and stretched by spokes m. The blades x, y are secured at right-angles to each other upon a shaft v, which is connected to the disks e and mounted to rotate in a bearing w fixed to the shaft o. Feathering is effected by means of arms z fixed to the shaft v and fitted with rollers 2, which engage a cam 3 mounted at the top of a sleeve 4. The shafts o are further fitted with auxiliary blades 6, Figs. 1 and 2. In a modification, Figs. 10 and 12, two blades x<1>, y<1> are mounted upon separate shafts v<1>, v<2>, one of which has an arm engaging the cam 3 described above and communicates its motion derived therefrom to the other shaft for feathering, by means of pinions 14, 15. The blades may be arranged at either side of the disk e, and they may be connected at their outer corners 16 to the disk e by ropes, which serve to take the strain when the blades are open. The blades x<1>, y<1> are slightly concave, as shown at 17, Fig. 10, and are strengthened by stays 19. They are further provided in their concavities with transverse blades 20, Fig. 12, which are also concave towards the disk e and aid in the propelling effect. Planes, construction of. - The supporting- surfaces consist of a semicylindrical body a provided at opposite sides with fixed planes b, d, Fig. 2, or b<1>, Fig. 10, and also of rotating disks e consisting of circular planes of canvas connected to a centre-piece n, Fig. 7, and stretched by spokes m. Steering.-In the machine shown in Figs. 1 and 2, rear elevators i are arranged to be adjusted independently by the same gear that is used to operate the steering-wheel k. A fixed vertical plane 11 is also provided to aid in steering. Balancing.-The rotating disks e mounted at opposite sides of the machine serve to increase the stability of the machine.
