Abstract

1,245,237. Detergent bars containing antibacterials. UNILEVER Ltd. 28 Nov., 1968 [1 Dec., 1967], No.54907/67. Heading C5D. An anti-bacterial detergent bar, containing at least two antibacterial compounds with minimum inhibitory concentrations against Staph. aureus of less than 5 p.p.m., solubilities in water of less than 1000 p.p.m. at 20‹ C. and melting points of at least 70‹ C., is prepared by adding a mix of the whole or a portion of the anti-bacterial compounds in a potentiator to the detergent from which the bar is then produced, which potentiator is (a) compatible with the detergent, (b) a solvent capable of dissolving at 25‹ C. at least 25% of its own weight of each of the anti-bacterial compounds and (c) used in quantities at least sufficient for the mix to contain the anti-bacterial compounds in solution. Preferably the mix is added (a) after the detergent has been milled at least once, (b) after other additives have been added in aqueous solution or suspension and (c) at the expense of water in the detergent. The detergent may be soap, a mixture of soap and non-soap or entirely non-soap, e.g. as disclosed in Specifications 1,171,617, 1,171,616, 1,167,131, 1,165,611 and 1,151,052. The detergent bar may be superfatted and contain a mixture of higher fatty acids with 10 to 18 C atoms. Typical antibacterials are 3,4,4<SP>1</SP>-trichlorocarbanilide and 3,5,4<SP>1 </SP>- tribromosalicylanilide. The potentiators include alkyl - phosphoramides; alkyl ureas; mixtures of C 8 -C 22 fatty acids and polyethylene glycols; phosphine oxides, e.g. trioctyl-phosphine oxide; amine oxides, e.g. lauryl dimethylamine N-oxide and complexes thereof with carboxylic acids such as acetic acid; polyethylene glycols, their esters and ethers; anioniccationic complexes formed by mixing amines and acids and wherein the total number of C atoms in the cationic and anionic parts is at least 10 and less than 40, e.g. cetyldimethylamine acetate; tri-ethanolamine-6-ethoxylate acetate or phosphate.
