Abstract

1,244,721. Reinforced glass. COURTAU L DS Ltd. 6 Dec., 1968 [6 Sept., 1967], No. 40814/67. Heading ClM. Reinforced glass is produced by embedding in a matrix of glass, carbon or graphite filaments coated with a metal. Coating of the filaments may be by electrodeposition, electroless plating or chemical plating and metals suggested are Ni, Cr, Co, Rh, Pa or Ru. The filaments may be in random orientation but preferably are laid substantially parallel with one another and alternate layers may be at an angle, such as a right angle with each other. The process is preferably carried out in vacuo. The carbon filaments are desirably obtained from filaments which are polymers or copolymers of acrylonitrile and which have been graphitized.
