Abstract

1360824 Electroplating polymers; activating polymers; coating with metals TEXTILKOMBINAT COTTBUS VEB 30 June 1971 30652/71 Headings C7B and C7F In a process for metallizing the surface of an organic or inorganic polymer, an electricallyconductive surface is produced on the polymer by grafting on (a) a non-noble and readily dissociating salt of an unsaturated acid, e.g. sodium acrylate, (b) an unsaturated acid, e.g. acrylic acid, and thereafter replacing the acidic hydrogen ions by noble metal ions, e.g. by treatment with silver nitrate solution, and thereafter chemically depositing metal thereon, or (c) a noble metal salt of an unsaturated acid followed by chemically depositing metal thereon; and subsequently electro-plating the surface. Grafting on of the film is preferably initiated by irradiation. The film of a noble metal salt as per (b) or (c) above, e.g. of silver salt, may be light irradiated to provide noble metal nuclei for the subsequent chemical metal deposition, e.g. of copper or nickel. In examples given polyamide warp knitted fabric and polyester fibre material fabric are treated by continuous passage through a sequence of baths to produce coatings of copper and chromium thereon; and polyethylene foil is coated with copper in selected areas by carrying out the polymerizing irradiation step through a stencil.
