Abstract

1466794 Terne alloy coating of Cu- or Niplated steel BUNDY CORP 4 April 1974 [29 June 1973] 15035/74 Headings C7B and C7F Steel, e.g. a tube, is electro-plated to a total thickness not exceeding 0À002" with Cu and/or Ni and is then, without any intervening heat-treatment, hot-dipped in terne, Pb-Sn, alloy containing e.g. 5-25% Sn. The steel may be galvanized or carry the residue of a Cu brazing coating. As described, a single Cu or Ni layer or separate layers of Cu on Ni or vice versa may be applied. The steel may be cathodically cleaned in alkali NaCN and then H 2 SO 4 before electro-plating, and HCl cleaned before terne dipping. In a continuous process, successive initial Ni and Cu strikes may be applied before Cu plating e.g. from a cyanide bath, followed by a further Ni strike then Ni plating. The coating is highly corrosion resistant.
