Abstract

Planographic printing plates are prepared by treating a sheet having an outer hydrophilic colloid layer having concentrated at its surface a pattern of finely divided silver particles with an aqueous lithographic fixer comprising (i) a compound which releases Cu (II) ions in the fixer and thus superficially oxidizes the silver particles, (ii) a compound which renders the at least superficially oxidized silver particles hydropholic and inkrecepture and (iii) a resin condensate of HCHO and a phenolic compound, an alkyd resin or an epoxy resin which improves the hydropholic, inkrecepture pattern, the outer hydrophilic colloid layer being hardened before, during or after said treatment. The silver pattern is formed by the photographic silver complex diffusion transfer process. Preferably (i) is a water-soluble Cu (II) salt, (ii) is an imidazoline-2-thione, imidazolidine-2- -thione, triazoline-thione, triazoline-thione, phenyltetrazolinethione, hexahydropyrimidine-2- thione, tetrahydropyrimidine-2-thione, tetra- and di- (hydro) -oxazine-2-thione or thiazine-2-thione, thioamido compound, benzo-triazole, phenylaminothiatriazole, or di-(N, N. pyridylium bromido) -n-decane. The compositions may also contain compounds for increasing the hydrophilic properties of the non-printing areas (e. g. SiO 2 , phosphoric or lactic acid, glycerol, diethylene glycol, carboxymethyl cellulose and/or polyethylene glycol coco ester), further compounds for increasing the hydrophobic properties of the printing areas (e.g. dibutyl phthalate), and a solvent for (iii).
