Abstract

1379850 Etching; printing-surfaces FUJI PHOTO FILM CO Ltd 20 Oct 1972 [21 Oct 1971] 48517/72 Headings B6C and B6J An aluminium or aluminium alloy (e.g. containing manganese, copper, zinc, titanium, iron, magnesium or chromium) support, for use in making a planographic printing plate by coating with a light-sensitive organic film and removing the latter by exposure and development in the non-image areas, is formed by first mechanically graining, then etching with a basic or acidic etching solution, and then subjecting to anodic oxidation, over its whole surface. The etching solution may be sodium hydroxide, potassium hydroxide, trisodium phosphate, disodium phosphate, tripotassium phosphate, dipotassium phosphate, sulphuric acid or persulphuric acid or the salts of said acids of a metal having a higher ionization potential than aluminium. The pH should preferably be greater than 11 or less than 3. In one example, sulphuric acid and nitric acid are used in succession, with an intervening washing step. Examples of the light-sensitive material are a bichromate mixed with polyvinyl alcohol, fish glue or egg albumin, a nitrogen-containing substance containing a diazonium or tetrazonium compound, and a polymer such as polyvinyl cinnamate or a derivative thereof.
