In apparatus having upper and lower platens carrying die blocks there is provided means for moving the lower platen out of vertical alignment with the upper platen to facilitate loading and unloading of workpieces. As particularly described, a quench tank 40, in which is mounted lower platen 60 carrying die block 66 is suspended at each end from upper cross-head 17 by pivoted arms 30, 32, 34, the outer two of which include coil springs 54 which normally keep the tank assembly raised clear of base assembly, but which can be over-ridden by hydraulic jacks 55 incorporated in the central arm when quenching is to take place. The whole of the lower tank assembly may be swung out to the position shown in broken line in Fig. 3 by rod 92 actuated by a rack and pinion 86, 90. Base assembly 42 includes passageways 98, 100, 102 and 104 each of which is supplied with coolant, and which communicate respectively with cavity 18 in upper platen 16 and so to hollow upper die block 20 having perforations 71 in its working face, to quench tank 40 (both of passages 100 and 104) and to lower die cavity 68.
