Abstract

1,241,892. Two-drum tumbler dryers. YORKSHIRE DRYER CO. Ltd. 18 June, 1970 [1 July, 1969], No. 33083/69. Heading F4G. To conserve floor area in launderettes, a tumbler dryer comprises two drying drums 26 disposed one above the other, and independently rotated and supplied with heated air (under the control of coin operating mechanisms located at the front of air heating chambers 11 and 12). Air drawn from the heating chamber 11 (containing a gas burner 24, or steam-heated) by an extraction fan passes through a duct 19 into an upper compartment 13 and out through a duct 20 to an exhaust chamber 16, and air drawn from the similar heating chamber 12 by a further extraction fan passes through a duct 21 into a lower compartment 14 and out through an aperture 22 to an exhaust chamber 15. The extraction fans (not shown) are located in housings 38 and 39 communicating with the exhaust chambers 15 and 16 and with a divided exhaust duct 44, fluff filters 37 being provided in the exhaust chambers 15 and 16. The rear of each drum 26 is carried by a spindle 28 and near the front of each drum is a peripheral band engaged by free rollers 31 and driven rollers 32 rotated via belts 42 by electric motors 41 which also drive via belts 43 the shafts 40 of the extraction fans. Each half of the exhaust duct 44 has a switch operated by a flap in the airstream so as to cut off the supply of gas to the main gas burner 24 if the air speed becomes too small. Electricity and gas supplies are also cut off by switches when the door of a drum 26 is opened and when a door giving access to the filters 37 is opened. Each main gas burner 24 is associated with a pilot burner acting on a thermocouple which cuts off gas supply to the main burner if the temperature of the thermocouple becomes too low. The gas supply is also cut off by a switch if the temperature becomes too high. Each compartment includes a manually-settable thermostat 58.
