Abstract

1,009,583. Drying-apparatus. WHIRLPOOL CORPORATION. Oct. 7, 1963 [Oct. 10, 1962], No. 39450/63. Heading F4G. In a dryer comprising a single speed electric drive motor, a blower for directing a stream of air through a zone in which materials are to be dried, and a heater for applying thermal energy at selected input rates to the air stream, a transmission connecting the motor and blower drives the blower at selected speeds and a control means synchronously regulates the heater to alter the thermal energy input to the air stream. As shown, a motor 14 drives a blower 30, via a pulley belt 18, and a drum 20 into which air heated in a conduit 26 by electrical resistance elements 33, 34 (Fig. 6), passes through an outlet 27 (Fig. 1), moisture-laden air being withdrawn by the blower 30 through a vent 32. The control means comprises a two-position knob 133 (Fig. 6), in one position of which, for a low heat output, contacts 113, 113a and 114, 114a are open and the belt 18 fits in a groove 53 in a pulley 50 coaxial with the blower impellers. To obtain a high heat output, knob 133 is related to close the contacts and simultaneously actuate a Bowden wire 78 connected to a disc 66 (Fig. 5), thus rotating the disc anti-clockwise so that a projection 67 moves the belt 18 into a pulley groove 52 and a higher blower speed is obtained. When the knob is returned to its other position a tapered roller 69 journalled on the disc 66 shifts the belt 18 back into the groove 53. A timer motor 150 (Fig. 6), high and low temperature thermostats 97, 96, and a safety thermostat 98 are provided, and a switch 100 automatically stops the machine when the dryer door is opened. In a modification (not shown), the resistance elements 33, 34 are replaced by a gas burner.
