Class 34(2) A clothes drier comprises a tumbler 15, Figs. 3, 4, having an open front with a bezel 45 having arcuate slots 44 therein and a back-plate having a perforate annulus 24 around a conical plate 17 carrying a hub 18 for the tumbler shaft 19, the tumbler being mounted in a cabinet having a door 3, louvred back and a duct 42 for electric heating elements 41, a space 46 being left between the duct and the top of the cabinet. The tumbler shaft is driven through pulley gear from an electric motor 34 which also drives the shaft 39 of a fan 26 mounted in an exhaust duct 27 having an inlet 28 in alignment with the tumbler annulus 24 and a lint interceptor 14 at its outlet. In operation, the fan draws air through the louvred back of the cabinet and thence through the ducts 42, 43 and the slots 44 into the tumbler from which it is withdrawn through the perforate annulus and exhausted through the duct 27. A part of the inflowing air passes through the space 46 above the duct 42, thus cooling the top of the cabinet, and enters the tumbler with the warm air from the duct. The motor 34 is controlled by a knob 11 on the top of the cabinet which, When operated, closes a time switch 49 and winds up clockwork mechanism in the switch which automatically cuts out the motor after an interval of time determined by the degree of turning of the knob. A second knob 12 contacts the heater circuit and a lamp 51 between the knobs indicates when the heater and motor circuits are closed. The circuits are automatically cut when the door is opened and a thermal cut out 50 breaks the heater circuit if the fan stops.
