Abstract

899,955. Tumbler driers. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. April 19, 1961 [April 25, 1960], No. 14129/61. Class 34(2) A tumbler drier comprises a drum and a heater to evaporate moisture from the clothes therein and having a thermo-responsive device adapted to be located in an access opening and to respond to the heat conditions in that position and ensure that the drier is switched off when the clothes reach a selected dry condition. The temperature within a tumbler drier 10 is controlled by a thermo-responsive device 104 mounted on the inside panel 81 of the door 80 and connected in circuit to control the temperature of an electric heater 70 at the other end of the drum and to switch both the heater and the drier motor off when the clothes reach a dry condition by sensing the consequent increase in heat leaving the drum. A blower 50 driven by a motor 52 circulates air through apertures 20, 74 in the rear casing wall 18 and bulkhead 24 respectively, and over the heater 70 which is mounted within a chamber 69 between the bulkhead and rear wall of the drum, the heated air passing through apertures 32 in the drum wall. The damp air passes from the drum through a lint trap 91 having a screen 92 within a housing 84 secured to the door 80, over the device 104 and through apertures 46 in a port plate 38 positioned between a drum collar 34 and the access opening 36 for passage through a front duct 48 leading to the inlet of the blower 50 having an outlet duct 58 to the atmosphere. The motor 52 is connected through a pulley 54 and belt 56 with a drum pulley 28. A reflector panel 72 is positioned about the heater 70 so as to radiate heat through the apertures 32 into the drum. In a modification the air passed through the drum is recirculated, the rear bulkhead being imperate to provide a closed chamber between the bulkhead and drum, and a tubular condensing heat exchanger is inserted in the duct 48 which utilizes a second blowing system and having a sump pan which is removable through a front grille below the door.
