Abstract

1,241,881. Stand-by supply systems. LICENTIA PATENT-VERWALTUNGS G.m.b.H. 3 April, 1969 [26 April, 1968], No. 17468/69. Heading H2H. A system for switching a load from a main supply to a stand-by supply without interruption includes a store which maintains the load energized during the switchover. In the case of an A.C. system, the two supplies are synchronized. As shown in the Figure, a first supply 1, which may be a thyristor inverter, energizes a load 3 by way of an energy store 4 and a switch 9 which may consist of a triac or an anti-parallel arrangement of thyristors, transistors or on/off thyristors. If the supply 1 should fail or become otherwise unsatisfactory, a monitoring device 6 begins to apply gating pulses to a second electronic switch 7, thus making a connection between the load 3 and the stand-by supply 2. After this connection has been made, and within the period during which the store 4 will still be supplying the load with a satisfactory signal, the device 6 acts to de-energize the switch 9 or to open a contact 8 so as to disconnect the first supply 1. A device 5 serves to maintain the supplies in synchronism and is monitored by a detector 10. If synchronism is lost whilst the load is supplied from the main supply 1, a contact 11 is opened to disconnect the standby source 2. If a fault now occurs in the main supply, a further contact 12 is closed after contact 8 has been opened so that the switch 7 is by-passed. The store 4 may include chokes and capacitors, or may be constituted by a dynamo-electric machine with a flywheel.
