Abstract

1,240,727. Organic compounds. UNIVERSAL OIL PRODUCTS CO. 2 Dec., 1968, No. 57021/68. Heading C2C. [Also in Division C5] In an improved continuous process for oxidizing a mercapto compound, a stream containing said mercapto compound is contacted in an oxidizing zone with an oxidizing agent, in an alkaline environment and in the presence of a phthalocyanine catalyst, thereby effecting the conversion of at least a portion of said mercapto compound to disulfide, effluent from said oxidizing zone is passed to a separation zone in which a liquid organic phase separates from a liquid alkaline phase, said organic and alkaline phases are separately withdrawn at rates adjusted to maintain within said separation zone a finite layer of each phase with an interfacial zone therebetween and withdrawn alkaline phase is recovered and recycled for further use in the process, said improvement comprising withdrawing from said separation zone at least a portion of a phthalocyanine catalyst complex which forms during said conversion and accumulates at the interfacial zone between said organic and alkaline phases in said separation zone, and admixing said withdrawn complex with recovered alkaline phase. Co, V, Fe, Cu, Ni or Cr phthalocyanine or a sulphonate thereof may be used. Tert-butyl mercaptan may thereby be oxidized to tert-butyl disulphide.
