Abstract

1431190 Desulphurizing oils EXXON RESEARCH & ENG CO 11 May 1973 [1 June 1972] 22619/73 Heading C5E The sulphur and metals content of petroleum oils are reduced by contacting with alkali metal, or an alloy thereof, together with a hydrogen-containing stream, contacting at least a portion of the mixture formed with hydrogen sulphide, water or acid and subsequently isolating oil of reduced sulphur and metals content. It is stated that the presence of hydrogen can result in a lower production of sludge and of polymeric materials which increase the viscosity of the oil than the process of co-pending Application 21875/73. In embodiments in which the mixture is contacted with 10-400 mole per cent H 2 S (based upon the alkali metal compounds) the metal compound-containing phase is separated from the oil phase and contacted with either molten sulphur or a sulphur-rich alkali metal polysulphide and thereafter the alkali metal polysulphide formed is used in the electrolyte production of alkali metal
