Abstract
1,195,289. Oxidation of sulphide compounds. UNIVERSAL OIL PRODUCTS CO. 6 Nov., 1967 [10 Nov., 1966], No. 50284/67. Heading C1A. Solutions of soluble sulphide compounds are oxidized by contact with molecular oxygen in the presence of a solid catalyst comprising a sulphide of nickel, iron, or cobalt supported on a carrier. The solution may be an aqueous alkaline solution, in particular, an ammoniacal solution of hydrogen sulphide, and the carrier may be alumina or activated charcoal, or other porous material. (A list is given). The catalyst/carrier composite may contain up to 63 wt. per cent of catalyst, calculated as the sulphide. The process is carried out at 0‹ to 100‹ C. using 0À25 to 1 moles of oxygen per mole of sulphide if elemental sulphur is the desired porduct, and at 100‹ to 200‹ C. using more than 2 moles oxygen per mole of sulphide if the desired product is a highly oxidized solution consisting mainly of sulphate, but possibly containing thiosulphite, sulphite, or dithionate, which solution has a low biological oxygen demand so that it may be discharged into rivers. In each case the reaction is performed at a pressure such that the solution is maintained in the liquid phase, and in the former case the sulphur is recovered by filtration, centrifugation, or settling.
