Abstract
1321475 Sulphur removal from aqueous streams UNIVERSAL OIL PRODUCTS CO 27 Oct 1970 50888/70 Heading C1A An aqueous stream containing a watersoluble sulphide compound is treated by (a) contacting the stream and O 2 in an amount less than 0À5 moles of O 2 per mole of sulphide compound with a first solid oxidizing catalyst at a pressure of 1À1-3 atm. absolute (1-30 p.s.i.g.) and a temperature of 24-79‹ C. to form an effluent stream containing a watersoluble polysulphide; (b) contacting the effluent stream and O 2 in an amount less than the total amount utilized in step (a), with a second solid oxidizing catalyst at a temperature greater than m.p. of sulphur and a pressure sufficient to maintain at least a portion of the first effluent stream in liquid phase, effective to form an effluent stream comprising a mixture of liquid sulphur and a treated aqueous stream; and then, (c) separating the liquid sulphur from the effluent stream to produce an aqueous stream substantially free of sulphide compound. The sulphide compound may be NH 4 S<SP>x</SP>, NH 4 HS, an alkali metal sulphide, an alkali metal hydrosulphide, an alkaline earth metal sulphide or an alkaline earth metal hydrosulphide. The oxidizing catalysts may be a metallic phthalocyanine sulphonate e.g. cobalt phthalocyanine monosulphate combined with an activated carbon carrier material. The catalyst may be an iron group metallic sulphide, e.g. NiS. The carrier material may be alumina or activated carbon. The conditions utilized in step (b) may be a temperature of about 250‹ F. and a pressure of about 90 p.s.i.g.
