Claims (10)

What we claim is :-
1. A catalyst for treating, waste gases, comprising carbon derivatives in addition to hydrogen sulfide antr sulfur dioxide of sulphur^hy the Glaus reaction, comprising active alumina and a titanium compound which, calculated as titanium oxide, represents from 1 to 60% by weight of the final catalyst, having a specific surface area of at least 80 m /g, and optionally comprising a minor amount of a compound of a metal from the group of molybdenum, cobalt, nickel, iron and uranium.
2. A catalyst according to claim 1, substantially as hereinbefore described in any one of Examples 2 to -5·
3. , method of preparing a catalyst aocording to claim 1 or 2, comprising impregnating a carrier consisting of active alumina with a solution of a titanium salt.
4. · A method of preparing a catalyst according to claim 1 or 2, comprising agglomerating a mixture of an oxide or hydroxide of aluminium and an oxide, hydroxide or other compound of titanium.
5. A method according to claim 4i wherein the aluminium hydroxide is used in the form of a gel or a sol.
6. A method acoording to claim 4 to 5i wherein the titanium oxide, hydroxide or compound is used in the form of a gel or sol.
7. A method of preparing a catalyst according to claim 1 or 2, comprising coprecipitating or cogelling the components. l?o
8. · A method according to claim 5» substantially as hereinbefore described in any one of Examples 2 to 5·
9. » A alumina/titanium catalyst whenever prepared by a process according to any one of claims 5 to 8.
