Abstract

1318794 Waste water treatment UNIVERSAL OIL PRODUCTS CO 22 Oct 1970 50116/70 Heading C1C A method of treating an aqueous waste stream containing NH 4 HS comprises (a) Catalytically treating the stream with oxygen under oxidizing conditions to produce an effluent stream containing NH 4 OH, (NH 4 ) 2 S 2 O 3 , elemental sulphur and ammonium polysulphide; (b) Recovering from (a) an aqueous stream containing (NH 4 ) 2 S 2 O 3 ; (c) Mixing this stream with a stream containing H 2 S, (NH 4 ) 2 S or NH 4 HS and subjecting the mixture to reducing conditions thereby producing a stream containing a minor amount of ammonium polysulphide; (d) Subjecting the stream from (c) to polysulphide reducing conditions to produce an overhead stream containing NH 3 , H 2 S and H 2 O and an aqueous bottom stream containing elemental sulphur; and (e) Separating the sulphur, forming an aqueous stream free of thiosulphate and sulphur. In a modification of the above method, the oxidizing conditions include a mole ratio of O 2 to NH 4 HS of less than 0À5 : 1, thereby producing an aqueous effluent stream containing ammonium polysulphide and a minor amount of (NH 4 ) 2 S 2 O 3 and step (b) comprises subjecting the effluent stream from step (a) to polysulphide decomposition conditions to produce an overhead stream containing NH 3 , H 2 S and H 2 O and an aqueous bottom stream containing elemental sulphur and (NH 4 ) 2 S 2 O 3 , and separating sulphur from the bottom stream to recover a stream containing (NH 4 ) 2 S 2 O 3 . The catalyst used in step (a) may be phthalocyanines or metal (e.g. iron) sulphides. The sulphidecontaining stream utilized in step (c) may be an H 2 S-rich stream recovered from the products of a hydrocarbon conversion process, or the overhead stream containing NH 3 , H 2 O and H 2 S resulting from the decomposition of ammonium polysulphide in step (b) in the modified method above. The reduction conditions utilized in step (c) include a temperature of 93-371‹ C., a pressure sufficient to maintain part of the aqueous stream in the liquid phase, and a contact time of from 0À01 to 2 hr.
