Abstract

1450845 Sulphur; sulphur dioxide removal from gases STAUFFER CHEMICAL CO 3 July 1974 [11 July 1973] 29455/74 Heading C1A A process for removing sulphur dioxide from a SO 2 -containing gas comprises contacting the gas with aqueous absorbent to form SO 2 -rich absorbent having a pH from 2À8 to 4À5 and contacting the SO 2 -rich absorbent with hydrogen sulphide to form sulphur, the SO 2 -rich absorbent and H 2 S being contacted by forming a mixture which is cocurrently conveyed in a reaction zone under turbulent flow conditions in which the H 2 S is intimately intermixed with the SO 2 -rich absorbent for a sufficient length of time to react a substantial portion of SO 2 in the aqueous absorbent with H 2 S to form S. The aqueous absorbent may be water, sodium phosphate solution, sodium citrate solution or their mixtures. The process may be cyclic. A modification of the above process in which the SO 2 -rich aqueous absorbent is contacted with a gas mixture containing H 2 S and one or more inert gases comprises providing H 2 S in an amount less than that required stoichiometrically to regenerate aqueous absorbent, separating the gas mixture depleted in H 2 S content from partially-regenerated absorbent which is contacted with a second gas mixture containing H 2 S in a stoichiometric excess of that required to regenerate aqueous absorbent.
