Abstract
1319619 Waste water treatment UNIVERSAL OIL PRODUCTS CO 27 Oct 1970 50887/70 Heading C1C A method of treating an aqueous waste stream containing NH 4 MS comprises (a) catalytically treating the stream with oxygen under oxidizing conditions to produce an effluent stream containing NH 4 OH, (NH 4 ) 2 S 2 O 3 and elemental sulfur or ammonium polysulfide, (b) recovering from (a) an effluent stream containing (NH 4 ) 2 S 2 O 3 and (c) catalytically treating this stream with hydrogen under reducing conditions to produce an effluent stream free of (NH 4 ) 2 S 2 O 3 . In a modification of the above method, the oxidizing conditions of step (a) comprises a mole ratio of O 2 to NH 4 HS of less than 0À5 : 1 thereby producing an aqueous effluent stream containing ammonium polysulfide and a small amount of (NH 4 ) 2 S 2 O 3 , the effluent stream being subjected to ammonium polysulphide decomposition condition, to produce an overhead stream containing NH 3 , H 2 S and H 2 O and an aqueous bottom stream containing elemental sulfur and (NH 4 ) 2 S 2 O 3 , and separating the sulfur from this stream. The catalyst utilized in step (a) may be phthalocyamines and metal (i.e. iron) sulphides, and the catalyst in steps (c) may be cobalt sulphide combined with a carrier such as charcoal, activated carbon and a refractory inorganic oxide.
