A nitrided alloy with a degree of nitriding decreasing inwardly from the surface thereof consists of at least one metal from each of the Groups I, II and III where Group I = Nb, Ta and V, Group II = Ti and Ti with up to 3% (by weight) of its content replaced by Zr, Group III = Mo and W; and, subject to the following definitions: - where (a) for Nb-Mo-Ti, Nb = 20-85%, (b) for Nb-W-Ti, Nb = 10-85%, (c) for Nb-Mo-W-Ti, Nb minimum = 10E+20D and Nb maximum = 85%, (d) for Ta-Mo-Ti, Ta = 25-88%, (e) for Ta-W-Ti, Ta = 10-88%, (f) for Ta-Mo-W-Ti, Ta minimum = 10E+25D and Ta maximum = 88%, (g) for V-Mo &/or W-Ti, V = 15-90%, (h) for > 1 of Nb, Ta and V with Mo and Ti, minimum Nb-Ta-V # 20A+25B+15C, (i) for > 1 of Nb, Ta and V with W and Ti, minimum Nb-Ta-V # 10A+10B+15C, (j) for > 1 of Nb, Ta and V with Mo, W and Ti, minimum Nb-Ta-V # (A+B) (10E+25D) + 15C, (k) for > 1 of Nb, Ta and V, their maximum # 85A+88B+90C, (1) for Nb-Mo &/or W-Ti, Ti = 1-45% and Nb/Ti> 1, (m) for Ta-Mo &/or W-Ti, Ti = 1-35% and Ta/Ti > 1, (n) for V-Mo &/or W-Ti, Ti = 1-45% and V/Ti > 0À66, (o) for > 1 of Nb, Ta and V with Mo &/or W and Ti, Ti minimum = 1% Ti maximum # 45(A+C) + 35B and Nb-Ta-V/Ti # A+B+0À66C, (p) for Nb &/ or V with Mo and Ti; Mo = 2-60%, (q) for Ta-Mo-Ti, Mo = 2-50%, (r) for Nb, Ta &/or V-W-Ti, W=2-80%, (s) for Nb, Ta &/or V-Mo-W-Ti, Minimum Mo+W = 2%, Maximum Mo+W # 60D (A+C) + 50BD+80E. Broad compositional ranges for the six ternary alloys are as follows (many specific examples being given): - The following examples of higher alloys are given:- (a) Nb35, Ta35, Mo10 Ti20; (b) Nb30, Mo10, W10, Ti20; (c) Nb50, Mo12À5, W12À5, Ti25; (d) Nb37, V30, Mo8, Ti25; (e) Nb25, Ta25, V25, W5, Mo5, Ti15 (f) Ta52À4, Mo12À5, W12À5, T122À5; (g) Ta53, V22, Mo7, Ti18 (h) Ta36, Nb18, V10, Mo18, Ti18; (i) Ta42, V12, Mo26, Ti20; (j) V39, Nb29, Mo8, Ti24; (k) V34, Nb13, Ta25, Mo7, Ti21; (1) Ti40, Nb30, V20, Mo10. Nitriding may be effected in nitrogen or argonnitrogen at atmospheric pressure so that the nitrogen pick-up is at least 1mg/cm<SP>2</SP>, the surface micro-hardness is at least 1000 DPN, and the reaction depth to which such hardness is developed is at least 0À5 mil.
