Abstract

1,239,187. Refrigerating; defrosting. STREATER INDUSTRIES Inc. 18 Feb., 1970 [19 Feb., 1969], No. 7834/70. Heading F4H. In a vapour compression system having a plurality of evaporators 10, 20, 30, the evaporators are defrosted singly by closing a common liquid supply valve 66 and by feeding hot gas to the evaporator to be defrosted. The hot gas feed is accomplished by closing the relevant one of cold gas return valves 61, 62, 63, and opening the corresponding one of hot gas supply valves 74, 75, 76. Hot gas is condensed in the evaporator undergoing defrosting and the condensate passes through an expansion valve by-pass line 13, 23 or 33 to be fed to the remaining working evaporators. The valve 66 may be provided with a control mechanism 80, 81, 82 which, in the event of the feed pressure to the working evaporators during defrosting becoming too low, overrides the defrost control to admit liquid from a receiver 6. The defrost cycle may be controlled by a timer 88 to allow two hours of normal refrigeration followed by a defrosting operation in which the evaporators are defrosted sequentially.
