Abstract

A refrigeration system of the flooded-coil type includes two vessels 15, 16 one of which is connected to receive and accumulate liquid refrigerant from the evaporator coils 18 while the other is connected to supply liquid refrigerant to the evaporator, and control means for periodically reversing the functions of the vessels. As shown, liquid refrigerant from the condenser 12 passes through a valve 13 and one of two solenoid valves 20, 21 into one of the vessels 15, 16. From that vessel, the refrigerant passes through a check-valve 29 or 30 and a fixed flow valve 17 to coils 18, and mixed refrigerant liquid and vapour from the coils passes to the other vessel via a check-valve 27 or 28. Vapour from the other vessel returns to the compressor 10 via a solenoid valve 22 or 23. The valves are controlled, either by a timer (Fig. 2, not shown) or by floats responsive to the liquid level in one of the vessels (Fig. 3, not shown) so that valves 21 and 22 are open while valves 20 and 23 are closed and vice versa. The refrigerant supplied to vessel 15 or 16 contains flash gas which is returned to the compressor via a valve 24 or 25, said valves being connected in parallel with valves 22 and 23, respectively, and being adjusted so as to maintain a pressure in vessels 15, 16 sufficient to ensure the supply of liquid to coils 18. In a second embodiment (Fig. 4, not shown) the major portion of the liquid from the condenser is supplied to the vessel which is receiving liquid from the evaporator, and a minor portion of the condensate is passed through a pressure reducing valve to the other vessel to discharge liquid refrigerant therefrom. In a third embodiment (Fig. 5, not shown) liquid from the vessels is supplied to the evaporator via a receiver which receives all but a minor portion of the refrigerant from the condenser, the remaining portion being used to pressurize the vessels as in the previous embodiment. Alternatively, the pressurizing refrigerant may be derived from a point upstream of the condenser.
