Fired or sintered material 5 from a furnace drops into a trough 6 formed between a well 4 having air ports 8 and the initially sloping section 2 of the upper run of a cooling grate 1. Pressure air leaves the individually controlled ports 8 at 20-100 metres per second, and, following the path shown by arrows 12 and 14, is used as preheated combustion air in the furnace. Other cooling air supplied through the horizontal section 3 of the upper run of the grate is vented at 16.
