Abstract
1425214 Shaft furnaces MAERZ OFENBAU AG 19 April 1973 [24 April 1972] 19182/73 Heading F4B Burning of granular material, e.g. limestone, is carried out in a group of three shaft furnaces 1-3, each having a preheating zone A, a combustion zone B and a cooling zone C, one of the shafts acting as the heated shaft and the other two receiving the discharge flow therefrom. Each shaft is provided, at the junction between zones B and C, with an annular channel 4-6, the channels being interconnected by ducts 16-18. The roof over each of the ducts 16-18 is formed with openings 19<SP>1</SP>, 19<SP>11</SP> for poking or measuring. In operation each shaft acts in turn as the heated shaft and is supplied with combustion air 10 and with fuel through conduits 11. The combustion gases flow downwardly with the material being treated and exit, through the pile 15 of material at the upper end of the cooling zone, into the annular channel and pass through the connecting ducts and the annular channels of the other shafts to flow upwardly through the downwardly moving material in the other shafts. Cooling air 20 is blown into the shafts from the bottom.
