Abstract

1,239,031. Sizing warp threads. DOW CHEMICAL CO. 2 Oct., 1968 [2 Oct., 1967], No. 46840/68. Heading D1P. Warp threads are sized by impregnating or coating them with a non-aqueous solution or solution or suspension in an organic liquid of a film-forming resin, retaining them in a heated zone of the vapour of the organic liquid for a sufficient time to allow complete evaporation of the organic liquid from the threads thereby recovering the organic liquid, and recovering the sized threads from the vapour zone. The organic liquid may be hexane, decalin, benzene, toluene, methylene chloride, trichloroethylene, perchloroethylene or 1,1,1-trichloroethane. Suitable resins are polyglycol-toluene diisocyanate resins, ethyl cellulose and polyvinyl acetate-unsaturated aliphatic ester copolymers, e.g. copolymers of vinyl acetate with 30-50% by weight a polymerizable monomer consisting of di-aliphatic ester of a dibasic acid in which one of the aliphatic radicals of the ester is an alkenyl radical having 2-4 carbon atoms and the other is a saturated aliphatic radical having 2-18 carbon atoms. After weaving the fabric may be desized by dipping it in or spraying it with a non-aqueous organic liquid solvent of the film-forming resin, which may be same as that used to apply the resin, and removing the solvent by evaporation in a heated zone of the vapour of the organic liquid solvent and passing the fabric into a vapour free zone.
