Abstract

Flame-resistant coated fabrics formed from filaments, fibres, yarns and threads of cellulose acetate produced by spinning a solution having uniformly distributed therethrough a flame-proofing agent, have a coating of a non-tacky film-forming synthetic organic polymer or of a composition containing such a polymer, the flammability of which polymer or polymer-containing composition is not substantially greater than the flammability of standard cellulose acetate, whilst the temperature of thermal decomposition of the polymer or polymer-containing composition does not substantially exceed that of the flame-resistant cellulose acetate employed and the decomposition products of the polymer or polymer-containing composition at the temperature of decomposition are soft and may be sticky. The cellulose acetate may be rendered flame-resistant by the substantially uniform dispersion therethrough of a tris(polybromo-aliphatic or -aromatic) phosphate having a bromine content of at least 50% by weight in an amount of 2,5-10% by weight of the cellulose acetate. The weight of the coating may be from 0,1 to 5,0% of the weight of the cellulose acetate. The coating may be applied as a dressing composition, which may be taken up in an amount from 0,1 to 5,0% of the weight of the cellulose acetate. The polymer may be an organic derivative of cellulose such as cellulose ethers, e.g. ethyl cellulose; polymers of vinyl and vinylidene monomers which form long carbon chains, at least a proportion of which carbon atoms are linked to acyloxy, carboxylic acid, carboxylic acid anhydride, carboxamide, N-substituted carboxamide, carbalkoxy and carbalkoxy alkyl groups, examples of which are given; alkylated aminoplast-forming condensation products such as the alkylated dimethylol-ureas and the alkylated methylol urea-melamine co-condensation products; and halogenated polymeric hydrocarbons such as chlorinated synthetic rubber. The coating composition may be applied by passing the fabric through a bath containing a solution, suspension or emulsion of the composition in an aqueous or organic solvent, examples of which are given. Other flame-proofing agents which may be used are tris (chloro ethyl) and tris (dibromopropyl) phosphate, aluminium pyrophosphate and complex organic halogen-containing polyphosphonate esters. The fabric may be sized prior to coating. Specification 958,120 is referred to.ALSO:Flame resistance filaments, fibres, yarns and threads formed from a cellulose acetate produced by spinning a solution having uniformly distributed therethrough a flame-proofing agent, have a coating of a non-tacky film-forming synthetic organic polymer or of a composition containing such a polymer, the flammability of which polymer or polymer-containing composition is not substantially greater than the flammability of standard cellulose acetate whilst the temperature of thermal decomposition of the polymer or polymer-containing composition does not substantially exceed that of the flame resistant cellulose acetate employed and the decomposition products of the polymer or polymer-containing composition at the temperature of decomposition are soft and may be sticky.
