Abstract

Wood is acetylated to proof it against fungi and termites by impregnation at 100-130 DEG C. and 150-200 p.s.i.g. with a mixture of acetic anhydride and an aromatic or chlorinated hydrocarbon solvent which has a b.p. of at least 80 DEG C., is miscible with and inert to acetic anhydride, is substantially immiscible with water, and does not swell wood, the weight gain on acetylation being at least 18%. The wood may be impregnated before impregnation. The wood may be treated with solvent vapour before and after acetylation to remove moisture and acetic anhydride respectively. Acetic anhydride and solvent may be recovered and returned to the process. The treated wood may be kiln dried at 100 DEG C. The solvent may be benzene, isopropyl benzene, toluene, zylene, mono- or di-chlorobenzene, ethylene dichloride, trichloroethylene, tetrachloroethylene, or carbon tetrachloride. Various species of wood are specified.ALSO:Wood is acetylated by impregnation at 100-130 DEG C. and 150-200 psig with a mixture of acetic anhydride and an aromatic or chlorinated hydrocarbon solvent which has a bp of at least 80 DEG C., is miscible with and inert to acetic anhydride, is substantially immiscible with water, and does not swell wood, the weight gain on acetylation being at least 18%. The wood may be evacuated before impregnation. The wood may be treated with solvent vapour before and after acetylation to remove moisture and acetic anhydride respectively. Acetic anhydride and solvent may be recovered and returned to the process. The treated wood may be kiln dried at 100 DEG C. The solvent may be benzene, iso-propyl benzene, toluene, xylene, mono- or dichlorobenzene, ethylene dichloride, trichloroethylene, tetrachloroethylene, or carbon tetrachloride. Various species of wood are specified.
