Abstract

An unsupported, uniformly microporous sheet material is produced by forming a polymer solution essentially containing (1) a polymer component comprising at least one polymer which is either (a) a vinyl polymer or (b) a polyurea formed by chain extending a compound obtainable by the reaction of at least one polyalkylene ether glycol and at least one organic diisocyanate by means of a compound having two active hydrogen atoms bonded to amino nitrogen atoms, and (2) an organic solvent for the polymer component, adding an inert liquid which is a non-solvent for the polymer and is miscible with the organic solvent to the polymer solution until a substantially colloidal polymer dispersion is formed, coating this dispersion on to an impervious substrate, e.g. glass or stainless steel, treating the coated substrate with an inert liquid which is a non-solvent for the polymer component and is miscible with the organic solvent, drying the resulting product, and stripping the microporous sheet ffom the substrate. The coated substrate may be treated with water, ethylene glycol or glycerol and may be subjected to the action of steam. The dried coating may be heat-treated at 140 DEG to 200 DEG C. for 1 to 10 minutes. The polymer component may consist of polyvinyl chloride, poly-a -methyl styrene, one or more polyureas, or at least one vinyl polymer and at least 50% by weight of at least one polyurea. Examples of vinyl polymers, polyureas, polyalkylene ether glycols, and diisocyanates are given. Examples of chain-extending agents, which may be hydrazine, substituted hydrazine, or a diamine in which the amino groups are primary or secondary, are also given. Examples of suitable organic solvents for the polymer component are given, some of which are water-miscible and are employed in admixture therewith. Examples of the non-solvent inert liquid are also given and include water. Specifications 914,712 and 914,713 are referred to.
