Abstract

Polythioureas are prepared by interfacial reaction of (1) a solution of an organic diisothiocyanate in a water-immiscible solvent and (2) an aqueous solution of a diamine having at least one hydrogen atom on each amino-nitrogen atom. Specified are hexamethylenediamine and 4,41-diphenylmethane diisothiocyanate as the reactants and benzene, toluene, chlorobenzene and nitrobenzene or mixtures thereof as the water-immiscible solvent. The products are elastomeric and are soluble in solvents such as pyridine, dimethylformamide and dimethyl sulphoxide. The products are useful in the formation of films and filaments.
