Abstract
A coating of paint, lacquer or varnish solvent-free liquid polymer, or a solution or dispersion e.g. an aqueous dispersion of an elastomeric polymer is bonded to the surface of a normally solid thermoplastic synthetic material by treating the surface with a liquid which is capable of dissolving the material at elevated temperatures only, the liquid being at a temperature at which it is a solvent for the material but which is below the melting point of the material, and the time of treatment being such that when subsequently freed substantially from the solvent the surface has a matt white appearance, cooling the material to a temperature at which the liquid is no longer a solvent therefor, substantially freeing the surface of solvent, and applying the liquid paint, lacquer or varnish solvent-free liquid polymer or a solution or dispersion e.g. an aqueous dispersion, of an elastomeric polymer to the treated surface. The thermoplastic synthetic material may be crystallisable and may take the form of a sheet of fibres woven into a fabric. The thermoplastic synthetic material may be a polyolefin e.g. isotactic polybutylene, copolymers of ethylene and propylene, isotactic polypropylene which is subjected to the action of normally liquid hydrocarbon at a temperature above 125 DEG C., polyethylene of the high density type which is subjected to the action of a normally liquid hydrocarbon at a temperature of at least 90 DEG C.; chlorinated polyolefins, polyethers obtained by polymerizing halogenated pentaerythritol, a chlorinated pentaerythritol polymer or a polycarbonate which is subjected to the action of an aliphatic ketone at a temperature of at least 90 DEG C.; or a vinyl chloride polymer which is subjected to the action of a chlorinated aromatic hydrocarbon at a temperature of at least 90 DEG C. The varnish may be of the glyptal, long oil alkyd or phenolic oil type. The lacquer may comprise a cellulose derivative, a polyurethane or a chlorinated rubber. The emulsion paint may comprise polyvinyl acetate in aqueous dispersion. The varnish, lacquer or emulsion paint may contain a pigment of the desired colour.
