Abstract

1,238,882. Indicating charge levels; controlling charging, BRITISH CAST IRON RESEARCH ASSOCIATION. 23 Oct., 1969 [6 Aug., 1968], No. 37354/68. Heading F4B. The pressure in a shaft furnace is used to indicate when a fresh charge is needed. A hollow probe 3 penetrates the furnace wall just above the level at which recharging is necessary. The probe has a restriction 4 at the furnace end and is connected to a controlled pressure air supply at the other end. Since the pressure at the furnace end is a minimum when the probe is above the charge level, a pressure switch 9 can be arranged to switch on a green light 11 when a recharge is necessary, a red light 10 being on when the furnace is full. Two-way valves 13, 15 are arranged so that a second furnace is connected to the pressure switch 9 and indicators 10, 11. In a modification, the air supply to the probe is omitted, the pressure in the furnace operating the switch. In this case, a connection to a pressure air supply is provided to blow obstructions out of the probe. The pressure switch 9 may be connected to prevent premature recharging of the furnace, and to initiate recharging when the charge level falls.
