Abstract

A grinding machine comprises a headstock 19 and a tailstock 29 for supporting an elongate workpiece 10 for rotation, a plurality of grinding wheels 11, 12 arranged for grinding different regions spaced apart along the workpiece, the headstock including a drive for causing rotation of the workpiece, and a heater 23 for heating the tailstock to move the workpiece into parallelism with the axes of the grinding wheels. The headstock includes an electric motor 23 and belt-drive 21 for rotating the holder 17 for the workpiece 10, such as a crankshaft, the other end of the workpiece being supported by the spindle 18 of the tailstock. Spaced parts of the workpiece are ground by the wheels 11, 12 which are mounted in a housing 15 movable towards and away from the workpiece. Gauges 24, 25 continuously measure the size of the workpiece and control the heater 23 which displaces the tail spindle 18 to compensate for the movement of the headstock caused by heat generated by the driving means.
