Abstract
1532562 Grinding DIAMOND INSTITUTE 13 Feb 1976 05839/76 Heading B3D An apparatus for cutting a cylindrical or conical base on a diamond A comprises a bruting machine 1 having a power-driven spindle 12 and a chuck or clip 11 for holding the diamond, a power-driven rotatable tool shaft 41 substantially at right angles to the spindle and having at its end a diamond tool B, means for adjusting the position of the tool angularly in horizontal and vertical directions, means 51, 52 providing an axial feed of the tool towards the diamond, and means 82, 83 providing a continuous oscillating movement of the tool and tool shaft about a pivot 71 parallel to the axis of the tool shaft. The spindle 12 is supported in bearings 13 on a pedestal 14 mounted on a base 15 and is rotated by a belt drive. A turntable 9 is adjustable about a pivot 16 on the base and is connected by a hinge 75 to a support plate 7 adjustable about the axis of the hinge by screws 85, the tool spindle thus being angularly adjustable in horizontal and vertical directions. A housing 3 has lugs 74 mounted on an axle 71 supported by pedestals 72 in the plate 7 whereby the housing is rockable about the axle upon rotation of a cam 82 engaging an adjustable follower 83 on the housing, the cam being rotated by a motor 81. The tool shaft 41 is mounted for rotation and axial movement in a bearing 45 in the front wall of the housing and has a chuck or stop 42 for holding the tool B in the form of an industrial or other disposable diamond. The shaft 41 has a splined connection to the drive shaft 44 of a motor 43 secured to the rear wall of the housing. The shaft is rotatable in but axially fixed to a push bar 53 which can be advanced to effect axial feed of the shaft 41 and tool B by rotation of a screw 51 driven by a motor 52 also fixed to the rear wall of the housing. A stop screw 61 is adjustable in the push bar and co-operates with a limit switch 63 to stop the axial feed and/or the tool rotation. In another embodiment, the shafts and motors are arranged in a cylindrical housing.
