Abstract

1,230,524. Grinding machine. MASCHINENFABRIK ZUCKERMANN K.G. WIEN. 16 May, 1969 [16 May, 1968; 31 Dec., 1968], No. 25144/69. Heading B3D. [Also in Division G3] A machine for grinding or polishing irregular workpieces of wood, e.g. chairlegs, comprises a machine bed 1, Fig. 8, on which a sliding carriage 2 is horizontally guided which carriage carries a turntable 7 carrying a vertical pillar 8 on which a second carriage 11 is guided for vertical movement, on which second carriage 11 an axially movable, horizontal beam 20, 24 is rotatably mounted, which beam has a fixing apparatus for one or more workpieces at one end. The machine also includes grinding wheels 14-19 each driven by its own motor, having its spindle perpendicular to the direction of motion of the carriage 2 and being different from its or one of its neighbours in diameter and/or direction of rotation. In the machine described the beam comprises an axially movable arm 20 and a rotatable spindle 24. The spindle carries a fixing apparatus 27 which includes a pair of elements for engaging the ends of a workpieee under hydraulic pressure, and a motor 30 for rotating the elements and workpiece. The carriage 2, turntable 7, carriage 11, arm 20, spindle 24, and elements of the fixing apparatus 27 are moved by oil motors 3, 9, 12, 22, 25, and 30 respectively each controlled by a servo-valve operated by an electric or electromagnetic switch controlled from a magnetic or punched tape. A further switch and servo-valve controls the clamping action of the apparatus 27. The operation of the motors is so controlled by the tape that a workpiece fed from a magazine 58 is picked up by the apparatus 27 and moved over the grinding wheels 14-19, which may have convex, flat, or concave grinding faces, before it is discharged into a container 62. In this machine only the long faces of the workpieee are ground. In a second embodiment the carriage 11, Fig. 15, carries a second beam carrying a pair of hydraulically operated jaws 69, 70 which after grinding of the long faces of the workpiece grip the latter, which is then released from apparatus 27, and rotate it through 90 degrees to cause its ends to be ground on one of the wheels 14-19. The apparatus 27 may include means for gripping more than one workpiece, in which case similar portions of the workpieces are ground by different wheels simultaneously.
