Apparatus for deburring and cleaning workpieces, such as gear-wheels, shafts or the like, comprises a plurality of tools 12, 13 adjustably mounted on supporting columns, and a carriage 21 which has a holder 15 for rotatably supporting a workpiece and is movable to present the rotating workpiece for successive operation by the tools, the holder having a chuck 16, Fig. 4, which is urged by a spring 17 to a clamped position in the region of the machining positions of the tools and urged to a released position against the action of the spring by a push-rod 19 in the loading position of the carriage. The carriage 12 is movable along a track 20 by a chain driven by a motor which may be controlled by an electrical time-delay relay to position the workpiece for succession operation by the tools which are arranged in series along the track. At the loading position, shown in Fig. 1, the rod 19 is engaged by a cam 18 to raise the chuck 16 against the spring 17 to enable a workpiece 14, to be mounted in the chuck. The carriage is movable to a first position I, Ia, wherein at least one cutting tool 12 on a crossslide 23 operates on the workpiece which is continuously rotated by a motor when the carriage is away from the loading position. Thereafter, the workpiece is moved to successive positions II, IIa . . . III, IIIa for operation on by tools 13 which may comprise brush rollers, milling cutters or grinding wheels. The carriage is located in the first operative position I, Ia by a tapered member 24 which is movable by an hydraulic drive into engagement with a recess 26 on a slider 28 movable on the carriage to a position in which a recess 27 engages a stationary tapered member 25. The carriage has a holder disposed above the chuck for supporting long workpieces such as gear shafts.
