993,049. Machine tool details. BRISTOL AIRCRAFT Ltd. June 14, 1962 [June 14, 1961], No. 21509/61. Headings B3K and B3T. [Also in Division G3] A method of modifying the electrical thickness of a specimen to conform to a desired pattern comprises determining whether the thickness exceeds the desired thickness, and then actuating machining means to reduce the thickness. A radome specimen 7 is located in a headstock 10, and a tailstock 6, carried by a table 1, the latter having wheels 2 which run along rails 3 on a bed 4. The headstock is rotated by a motor 11, through gearing 12, and a chain drive, and a lead screw 20 for moving the table along the rails, is rotated in a nut 22 by gears 17 and 19, driven by motor 11. A rotary cutting tool 37 driven by a motor 38 is carried by a pivoted arm 31, which projects through the headstock 10 and is adjusted relative to the work by a worm 40 actuated by a motor 41. A sensing head 42 forms part of a thickness measuring device 43, and in operation is brought into contact with the outer surface of the radome 7 at the point where the tool 37 makes contact with the inner surface of the radome. The table 1 is then moved to bring head 42 and tool 37 to the wider end of the radome. The work is rotated, and table 1 is moved along rails 3, thus scanning the radome in spiral manner, and the device 43 controls motor 41 to adjust the tool in accordance with the difference between the actual, and required thickness. In a modification, tool 37 is replaced by a reflector, the radome is scanned, and the information is recorded on e.g. punched cards, this information then being used to control the tool when the reflector is replaced by the latter.
