Abstract

A bed 7, Fig. 1, or other wheeled load, is pulled into a lift car 3 by a carriage 8 which is propelled by a plate chain 9 driven by an electric motor 13 in the lift. The chain is guided round sprockets 12 in the lift and the bed is guided by rails 16. Photo-cells 29 sense the presence of the bed and automatically summon the lift car and control the loading sequence. The lift is open fronted and each landing has a vertically sliding door 6. The carriage, Fig. 3, has arms 19, 20 which are in the position illustrated when the carriage is moved out to engage a bed. As the carriage moves forwards a sensing finger 22 contacts a rod 7.2 on the bed frame and is pushed back flush with the face 19.21 of the arm 19. This operates a switch which energizes an electromagnet and raises the arm 20 against a return spring, and stops and reverses the chain driving motor 13. The bed is now drawn into the lift, the door closes and the lift moves to the preselected floor. The reverse procedure is followed when the bed is unloaded. Figs. 5, 6 (not shown), illustrate an embodiment in which a single electromagnet operates both arms instead of a separate electromagnet being provided for each.
