Abstract

1,237,612. Softening cellulose textiles. FARBWERKE HOECHST A.G. 29 July, 1969 [29 July, 1968], No. 38031/69. Heading D1P. [Also in Division C2] Softening agents for cellulosic textile materials are prepared by reacting one mole of an N-alkyl-urea or an N-alkyl-biuret compound containing 12 to 22, carbon atoms in the alkyl radical with 3 or more mols (preferably 3.2 to 4 mols) of formaldehyde. The textile materials may consist of or contain cotton, staple fibres, rayon or regenerated cellulose or mixtures of such fibres with synthetic fibres, for example polyamide, polyester, cellulose tin acetate and the softening agent may be applied thereto either as an aqueous dispersion or as a solution in an inert organic solvent. The softening agents may be prepared by first condensing a fatty amine containing 12 to 22 carbon atoms with urea or biuret at a temperature of 125 to 150‹C and then methylolating the product with at least three mol equivalents of formaldehyde or formaldehyde generating substances, for example trioxane or paraformaldehyde. The fatty amines specifically mentioned are octadecylamine and dodecylamine. In general the softening agents are applied in quantities ranging from 0.01 to 1% by weight of material treated and may either be applied alone or with an acid catalyst. which may be an actual acid or a latent acid, for example magnesium chloride, zinc chloride zinc nitrate, diammonium phosphate or ammonium nitrate. The softening agents are compatible with other finishing, for example filling and smoothing agents, wetting agents, emulsifiers, water softeners, soil release agents, optical brighteners, catalysts, synthetic resin precondensation products and other additives which may be applied at the same time as, or separately from the softening agents.
