Abstract
1,237,574. Making electrical connectors. BOWTHORPE - HELLERMANN Ltd. 6 June, 1969 [23 July, 1968], No. 35125/68. Headings B3A and B3R. [Also in Division H2] A method of making a copper/aluminium electrical connector for a segmentally shaped aluminium conductor comprises friction welding a solid aluminium member 12 to a copper member 10 and then forming the aluminium member into a sleeve which is shaped to receive the aluminium conductor. The copper member is in the form of a tube, which is fixed in a clamp while the aluminium member is held in a chuck and rotated. When the weld joint is completed the member 12 stops rotating by means of a slipping clutch. A bore is formed in the member 12, which may be of the same diameter as the bore of the member 10. The aluminium tube so formed is compressed between dies to form a sleeve 32 which is subsequently compressed on to the aluminium conductor. The copper member may alternatively be formed as a palm (48), a pin (56) or a "flit plug" (60), Figs. 7-12 (not shown).
