Abstract

1459596 Crimping tools AMP Inc 16 March 1974 11774/74 Heading B4W [Also in Divisions H2 and B3] Wire 6 is connected to a ferrule 10 on a terminal by crimping the ferrule on to the wire and ramming the wire end axially into the ferrule with a twisting action. Apparatus for performing the method may comprise a benchmounted tool or machine or, a hand-operated tool (Fig. 1) of the toggle or cam type, e.g. as in Specification 918,577. In addition to dies 34, 36, 38, 40 for crimping the ferrule and a steel sleeve 15 to the insulation 8, holding dies 35, 41 are provided for gripping the end of the ferrule. Mounted by fasteners 48 on the crimping machine is a cylinder 50 housing a plunger 52 with a conical end 58. A sloping surface 62 on the head 50 of the plunger 52 is pressed by a spring 61 against a similar surface on an abutment 64. After the ferrule has been crimped, rotation of the head 50 by a rod 72 forces the rotating plunger into the wire end, Fig. 5, to weld some of the strands to each other and to the ferrule. Solid aluminium wires also may be crimped, the terminal being of soft metal such as aluminium, copper or tin-plated copper. Alternatively, the terminal may be made from composite stock of copper and aluminium, the width of aluminium providing a lining for the ferrule. The ferrule may have a welded or brazed seam, or a U-shaped terminal may be used, Fig. 7 (not shown), with offset arms (80) for engaging the wire end.
