A rotary hydraulic pump or motor comprising a working rotor 4, Figs. 1 and 2, having a plurality of radial vanes 22 sealingly engaging a surrounding housing 1, a plurality of sealing rotors 3, three shown, dividing an annular groove 2 between the rotor and housing into three working chambers 19, 20, 21 and gearing 14, 18 to permit the passage of a vane past a slot in a sealing rotor, includes in the housing on each side of a sealing rotor a radial groove 7, Fig. 4, and in the working rotor an arcuate groove 8 radially inwardly of each vane, so that as a vane passes a sealing rotor slot, the grooves co-operate with each other to connect the slot in turn with the working chambers on either side to mitigate against pressure surges to reduce vibration and noise to permit higher operating speeds.
