Abstract
1,236,831. Plastics film carrier bags. BRITISH VISQUEEN Ltd. 9 Sept., 1969 [18 Oct., 1968], No. 49477/68. Heading B8K. [Also in Division A4] A plastics film carrier bag comprises an integral thickened band 6 around the mouth of the bag and a handle hole 5 positioned beneath the band 6. The handle holes may be of any desired shape and may be defined by slits along three sides only, forming a flap. A gusset may be provided in the bottom fold of the bag. The bags are made in pairs from a flattened extruded tubular plastics film having two superposed thickened bands running centrally along the longitudinal direction, the film being slit longitudinally down the centre of the thickened bands, sealed and cut transversely at intervals, and cut to form handle holes. The transverse seals may be single seals which are cut centrally, or double seals, the film being cut between them. In a modification, the bags may be formed singly from tubular film having a single band of thickening at one edge which is slit centrally, or from two strips of film each having a thickened band at one edge and being sealed together at the other edge, the transverse seals and cuts and handle holes being formed as before. The tubular film may be extruded to form thickened portions by modifying the profile of the die lips, by cooling a uniformly thick film more strongly in particular portions, or by maintaining parts of the die at a lower temperature than the remainder.
