Alternatively, the first diagonal pair may be merely folded one on top of the other and the second pair then tied. In another form, Fig. 9, two flaps 6 are provided at one side only of the bag, the remaining material at the top being gathered as at 6<SP>1</SP> and the flaps 6 being teid therearound as indicated by the arrows. In a further form, Fig. 20, flaps 26 are formed by.a slit 24, 24a, and if the bag has a gusseted side the single slit causes a portion 31 of the gusseted side to be cut out. By providing a curve at the lower ends of the cuts the projecting portions are strengthened and are less likely to tear. The bags may be cut from a tube by sealing the tube transversely to form the bag bottom and providing a line of perforations so that the bags can be separated. The slits 24, 24a may also be merely lines of perforations which are torn when the filled bag is to be closed, these perforations being of wider spacing than those by which successive bags are separated. The pair of flaps 6 may be formed from a single cut which also separates the bags, a tap being left at the bottom of each bag corresponding to the cut-out on the following bag (Figs. 21, 22, not shown). The bags may be reinforced by inserts of ribbon, string or wire and the bag surface may be roughened.
