Cl. 229-54 1 Claim ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A plastic film bag construction having folded flap or gusset portions which may be optionally converted to a form providing handle means for carrying the bag; the bag being of generally conventional construction with a slight modification thereof to provide the optional handle feature.

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION Plastic film bags are commonly used to package consumer items, more particularly white goods such as shirts and the like. One well known bag construction includes a folded flap portion which extends into the interior of the bag to prevent inadvertent movement of the packaged item outwardly of the bag, yet allowing for filling the bag and for ordinary removal of the contents thereof.

Accordingly, an object of this invention is to provide an improved bag construction having a flap portion, wherein the flap portion is convertible into handle means for carrying the bag and its contents.

Another object of this invention is to provide a bag construction of the character described, wherein a folded edge portion of the flap is readily removable to thereby leave a part of the flap in strap or handle form which is readily accessible to provide carrying means for the bag.

Still another object of this invention is to provide an improved method of making plastic film bags of the flap type wherein a portion of the flap is made removable to thereby convert the flap into handle means.

Other objects of this invention will in part be obvious and in part hereinafter pointed out.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWING FIG. 1 is a plan view showing a bag construction embodying the invention, with parts broken away; before manipulation to provide handle means;

FIG. 2 is a sectional view taken on the line 2-2 of FIG. 1;

FIG. 3 is a partial plan view, similar to that of FIG. 1, showing part of the flap portion removed;

FIG. 4 is a sectional view taken on the line 44 of FIG. 3.

DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT Referring in detail to the drawing, a flexible plastic film bag embodying the invention, is generally indicated at 10. The bag is formed of extruded plastic film which may be derived from polyethylene, polypropylene or other suitable synthetic resin; the film preferably being transparent to make the packaged contents visible through the bag walls.

Bag 10 comprises a front wall 10 and a back wall 12 with the corresponding bottom edges thereof secured together as at 13 and the corresponding side edges being secured together as at 14. Back wall 12 includes an upice wardly extended portion 12A which is folded along a transverse fold line 15 located above the free top edge 11A of front wall 11, to provide a downwardly extending flap portion 16.

Flap portion 16 is disposed between opposed portions of front wall 11 and back wall 12, with the bottom edge 17 of the flap portion located below edge 11A of front wall 11. The opposite ends 18 of flap 16 are secured between the side edges 14 of

walls

11, 12, all in a manner known in the art.

It will be apparent that the arrangement of flap 16 interiorly of bag 10, allows for convenient filling of the bag as well as removal of the contents thereof; yet acting as a trap to prevent inadvertent movement of the packaged item outwardly of the bag. This trap action is effective in any position of the bag including an inverted position with the fold edge 15 extending downwardly.

While Bag 10 may be readily carried as such; it would be more convenient if the same could be carried by suitable handle means. Accordingly, bag 10 is modified, as shown in FIGS. 3, 4, to provide such handle means. To this end the fiap 16 and opposed back wall portion 12A is perforated along a transverse line indicated at 19, such line being located immediately below fold line 15.

It will be apparent that the purchaser of the packaged item carried in bag 10, may readily remove the narrow folded edge portion 15 of flap 16, including opposed

strip portions

20, 21 thereof, by tearing along perforation line 19. The removal of such folded edge portion, will leave the residual flap portion 16A with its

edges

17, 22 free of back wall portion 12A, yet secured at its end edges 18 to side wall edges 4; thus providing a straplike handle forming portion 16A with its top edge 22 coextensive with top edge 23 of back wall portion 12A.

Thus, bag 10 and its original or refilled contents may be carried in its normal upright condition by means of handle portion 16A.

What is claimed is:

1. A plastic film bag comprising front and back walls having interconnected bottom and side edges thereof, the back wall including an upwardly extending portion folded along a transverse line located above the top edge of the front wall to provide a downwardly extending flap having a lower portion thereof disposed between the front and back walls with the bottom free edge of the flap located beneath the top edge of the front wall, said flap having opposite end edges sealed between the side edges of said front and back walls, the upper portions of said back wall and flap being formed with transverse lines of opposed perforations located above the top edge of the front wall to allow the interconnected portions of said back wall and fiap at the fold line to be separated from the remainder of said back wall and flap, thereby allowing the remaining flap having free bottom and top edges to provide handle means for said bag.
