Abstract

1,236,217. Separating sheets. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP. 30 Sept., 1968 [3 Oct., 1967], No. 46294/68. Heading B8R. [Also in Division F2] Document-feeding apparatus incorporates a feed roller selectively movable between positions adjacent a feed path and remote from the feed path, wherein the feed roller is formed of resilient material which is compressible between two end plates when in the feed position to radially expand the roller so that its peripheral surface contacts a document. Apparatus, Fig. 1.-Documents 10 are supported on a platform 12 carried by rod 14 and urged by spring 15 against a rail 16 provided with a cut-out portion 18 through which a feed roller 19 may be projected. The feed roller 19 is formed of resilient material, has a hollow interior, and is compressible between two flanges (22), (26), Fig. 2 (not shown), connected to coaxial shafts (21), 25, shaft 25 being hollow and surrounding shaft (21). The roller 19 is continuously rotated through drive pulley 45, belt 46 and pulley 31. Solenoid 50, when energized, first moves both shafts (21), 25 axially to project roller 19 through cut-out 18 and then moves them axially relative to each other to expand the roller radially and feed a document 10 through a gap defined by throat 40, 41 until it is sensed by photo-electric device 55, 56 which de-energizes the solenoid. Co-operating feed rollers 60 continue advancing the document. The solenoid may be replaced by a continuouslyrotating cam.
