Abstract

1,027,448. Feeding sheets. W. F. WARD. May 24, 1963 [July 16, 1962], No. 20855/63. Heading B6B. A carton blank is separated from the bottom of a stack by a continuously moving endless belt 12 passing over a vacuum chamber 28 when spaced gates 20 are pivoted away from the stack to permit the bottom blank to pass thereunder. The chamber 28 comprises a rear compartment 60 permanently connected to a source of suction 64 and intermediate and front compartments 66 and 68 open adjacent the belt 12. A constantly rotating value 30 places the compartments 66 and 68 in communication with the compartment 60 one after the other whereby the bottom blank is fed away from the stack. As the leading edge of the blank passes over the compartment 68, the suction is switched from compartment 66 to compartment 68 so that suction is not applied to the next blank in stack. This prevents double feed. The gates are secured together by a common crossmember 80 and supported by parallel links 76, 78. Links 76 are rigidly fixed to a shaft 22 supported at each end on bearings. A twoarmed lever 84 is pinned to the shaft 22, Fig. 6, one arm 86 being attached to a block 88 slidably mounted on an arbor 90 and the other arm 106 being pivoted to a notched lever 108. A second two-armed lever 102 pivoted at 104, is attached at its upper end to a block 98 slidably mounted on the arbor 90 and is provided at its lower end with a cam follower roller 118. The lever 102 has an abutment 114 which co-operates with the notch 110 in lever 108. In operation, a lobe 122 of a cam 116 keyed to the shaft 74, rotates the lever 102 anticlockwise to move the arbor 90 to the left against the action of spring 92, while maintaining the lever 84 stationary. Finally, a projection 124 on lever 102 engages the lever 108 to release it from the abutment 114 and give the shaft 22 a rapid rotational movement as the spring 92 expands. This swings the gates 20 away from the stack to release the bottom blank.
