Abstract

897,056. Feeding sheets. ROSE BROS. (GAINSBOROUGH) Ltd. Nov. 16, 1959 [Aug. 15, 1958], No. 26255/58. Class 100(1) Apparatus for separating sheets, collapsed cartons, or like blanks from the bottom of a pile in a magazine 12 comprises a reciprocating carriage 14 having a series of spaced rollers 16 which support the pile, and a suction roller 17 mounted on the carriage about mid-way thereof between two rollers 16 and in contact with the pile. The suction roller 17 has one row of spaced suction nozzles 18, is freely mounted on a suction tube 19 having a row of ports which can register with the nozzles 18, and has a gearwheel fixed thereto which constantly engages a fixed rack. The tube 19 is rotatably mounted in the carriage, and has adjacent each end a segmental gear each adapted to engage a rack in turn, but not simultaneously, whereby the tube is rocked, first in one direction, and then in the opposite direction, as the carriage 14 reciprocates so that the ports in the tube are reversed towards each end of the carriage stroke. The carriage is cam-operated in timed relationship with a pushertype conveyer 31 arranged below the magazine 12. In operation, as the carriage 14 is moved to the right, the suction roller 17 seizes the end of the bottom blank 13 and rotates counterclockwise to deflect the end of the blank through the gap between the roller 17 and the adjacent trailing support roller 16. Suction is then cut off from the nozzles 18, and continued movement of the carriage causes the trailing roller 16 to strip the blank from the pile so that the blank falls freely on to a platform 32 in the path of the pusher of the conveyer 31. On the return movement of the carriage, a further blank is separated from the pile. A valve may automatically cut off suction from the roller 17 during inoperative rolling movements thereof.
